Tummy time... Is it really important?
Your precious little one has finally arrived. It is a whirlwind of hugs, sleepless nights, high emotions, gorgeous cuddles, and immense fatigue. Among the many concerns parents navigate is tummy time — especially when their infant resists it strongly.
Why Tummy Time Matters
The primary reason tummy time receives such emphasis is that it strengthens the muscles in the neck and promotes head control. Head control development is foundational — all subsequent motor skills like rolling, sitting, walking, eating, and talking rely first on the development of good head control.
Alternative Approaches When Baby Resists
If your child struggles with standard tummy time, the key is remembering the actual goal: developing neck strength. Several alternatives can achieve this:
Magic position
Helps gassy or reflux-prone babies settle while on their tummy.
Partial incline
Using a wedge or placing baby on parent's chest.
Supported tummy time
Placing a bolster under the baby's torso for comfort.
Side-lying
Builds lateral neck strength; alternate sides regularly.
Lifting through side-lying
Encouraging head lifts during pickup with finger support.
Key Takeaway
The essential principle is understanding the goal. Consistent daily activities that encourage neck strength development accomplish the objective, regardless of whether traditional flat tummy time is tolerated.
